Fret leveling can be an alternative to re-fretting if the existing frets are
not too severely worn. Re-fretting should be avoided if at all possible
because of the fingerboard material lost when frets are pulled out.
Many techs are financially motivated to re-fret when a fret level will solve the
problem. But I take the time to visually inspect and measure each fret with a
digital Luthier's micrometer to determine whether a re-fret is actually necessary.
This extra effort saves money and gets you the lowest string action without buzzing.
When re-fretting IS needed, we use a bench mounted fret press arbor, as opposed
to the hand held "vise grip" tool or even worse, a fret hammer, to ensure a more
